about

Two years ago, The Twelve Hour Foundation were invited, by artists Matt Hulse and Julia Zinnbauer, to participate in various projects inspired by Reading’s new town centre, developed in the early1970s. The main purpose was to celebrate the 45th and 50th anniversaries of the opening of the Hexagon and the Butts Centre shopping mall, respectively – both falling this year (2023).

The band’s brief was to create music to reflect the nature of the architecture, including its shape. For additional points of reference, they were given access to Alan Wykes’s documentary All Change for Reading, which had been recently restored by Matt.

Following a visit to the town, during which the band were given access to gather field recordings within the Hexagon itself, they set about writing and recording a suite of full-length instrumentals and imagined shopping centre jingles. With the exception of two ‘interval’ tunes, all pieces were written in 6/4 time. An arrangement of Sumer Is Icumen In – written by a Reading Abbey monk, coincidentally in 6/8 time – was also included.

In addition to its musical content, the album includes a comprehensive essay written by artist Julia Zinnbauer which focuses on the history of the town centre’s architecture.
